about

'Migrations of the Mind', Suzan Veneman's debut album, is the story of a musical search for her own identity after a diagnosis of MS in 2019.
The title piece is a three-part suite and each part describes different phases and emotions she went through. It was a long-cherished wish to release an album with her own compositions. In that sense, the diagnosis has been a catalyst, she admits: “I felt I had something to say now. A story to tell.”

Suzan Veneman grew up in a musical family. At a young age she started to play piano and trumpet. She also sang in a children's choir. Her first high school band was a soul band, “we played a lot of Stevie Wonder songs!”
In 2010 she won 2nd prize at the prestigious Princess Christina Jazz Competition. After her bachelor's in Jazz Trumpet in the Netherlands, she studied at Rutgers University in New Jersey. “Around the corner from New York City; the cradle of jazz. I have had lessons from Joe Magnarelli, Kurt Weiss, Alex Sipiagin and Jim Rotondi, among others.”

Suzan recorded 'Migrations of the Mind' at Wedgeview Studios on February 27-28 and March 1, 2021. Her brother, trombonist Vincent Veneman, composed and arranged the piece 'Sonority', the only track on the album that is not by Suzan. "For George" is a tribute to George Duke. On the bonus track 'Soulsong' we also hear Suzan as a vocalist.
